Joey, the son of Angela Schmidt-Foster (MSHOF member) and Don Foster ( MSHOF 2024 Inductee), began skiing in 1998 at the age of 2 under the guidance and tutelage of his parents at their home, the Mountainview Ski Centre in Midland.
With 35 km of ski trails as his playground and two of the best skier/coaches in the nation with him full-time, Joey’s natural inherited abilities were groomed to make him a promising world-class XC skier: the product of nature and nurture. Having fun with his friends and family on the trails put him in a good position to ski competitively throughout his teen years. Joey made a serious commitment to competition in 2010 at age 14, competing on the PSS High School team under the guidance of his coaches Tim Bourrie and Danielle DesRoches. The podium soon became a familiar place to finish a day of competition. By 2013, Joey was ranked 2nd in the country for his age group and competed at the Nationals in Whistler BC.
Joey’s meteoric rise to the top levels of XC competition had begun. In the years following up to 2017, he won 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals as a member of the Canadian Junior National team. He represented Canada at the World Junior Championships in Romania. At the time, he was ranked as one of the top under-20 male skiers in Canada. He competed for Canada at the World Cup Finals in Quebec City and raced internationally in Norway, Sweden and the USA.
Throughout the years of pressure competition and training, Joey maintained his composure. The importance of sportsmanship was reflected in his respect, friendship and comradery with teammates and competitors. Having finished 1st at the Canadian Eastern Championships in Ottawa in 2016, he disqualified himself for misstepping off the course, even though the infraction went unnoticed by others.
Joey carried his fundamental values of honesty, integrity and kindness throughout his competitive years. It continues to be important to Joey to be genuine, light-hearted, and fun.
