Dr. Richard Thomas

Dr. Richard Thomas’s accomplishments as an athlete and volunteer to the community of Midland, our province and our country are extremely impressive. Recognized early for his talent, he was named the 1966 Woodbridge High School Athlete of the Year. His athletic career includes representing the Newfoundland Provincial Rugby Team for three years (’78-’81 ). the Queen’s University Rugby Team for five years (’68-’70, ’73-’74) and reaching the OUAA Provincial Championship Final four times. His leadership and skills earned him a well-deserved place in the Queen’s University Rugby Hall of Fame. After moving to Midland in 1981, he continued playing rugby with the Midland Bulls Rugby Club.

Combining his high-level athletic experiences with his medical knowledge, he dedicated himself to the well-being of athletes, both locally and internationally. Richard was a part of the medical support group for the Women’s National Hockey team during their 1997 World Championship campaign. He provided medical coverage at numerous international events, which included the World Triathlon Championship in Manchester England, the Canada Winter Games in Cornerbrook Newfoundland (1999), and finally the Pan-American Games in Indianapolis (1987) and Cuba (1991 ).

Locally, he has been the medical doctor for the Ontario Provincial Rugby team and the Midland and Penetang Junior C Hockey teams. Throughout his career, his sport’s injury knowledge was sought after by many local athletes who were grateful for his knowledge and expertise.

His personal involvement in community events. such as the Terry Fox Run, the Midland Triathlon and the Butter Tart Trot, highlight his commitment to promoting wellness through sport in Midland and North Simcoe.
